Raschke was driving the Speed Demon III, a high-speed aerodynamic vehicle, when it lost control and went airborne around the 4-kilometer mark, reaching nearly 483 km/h. Despite swift medical assistance, he succumbed to his injuries and died the same day, according to a statement from the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA).

Raschke was a well-known name in the world of land speed racing and part of the Speed Demon team, one of the most successful teams in Bonneville history. Last year, he won the Hot Rod Magazine Trophy after reaching a speed of 719 km/h over five miles.
The accident occurred during one of the first runs of the new Speed Demon III, built using parts from the former vehicle of George Poteet, a legendary driver and record-holder who died in 2023.
The event was temporarily suspended, and the SCTA opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Speed Week, which began on August 2 and was scheduled to run through August 8, resumed after the tragedy. The Speed Demon team expressed deep sorrow on social media, asking for respect for Raschke’s family and friends, describing him as a skilled competitor with an admirable personality.
Raschke’s death shook the motorsport community, which recognized him not only as a talented driver but also as a charismatic figure. Speed Demon Racing holds multiple world records and, despite this loss, remains committed to pursuing new milestones. Raschke leaves behind a legacy of courage and passion for speed, remembered as one of the greats in the history of racing at Bonneville.
